Hornell City Department of Public Works

Refuse Collection and Recycling

Our Department provides weekly citywide refuse collection and disposal for slightly less than 4000 households. Once monthly, we also provide curbside pickup of recyclable material.

Our particular significance is the success of our recycling program. Hornell was the first community in Steuben County to embark upon a voluntary program of source separation and collection of recyclable materials.

The program was preceded by an in-depth public education program in the media, at public events, and distribution of recycling information and containers on a house by house basis. With the cooperation of Hornell's residents we were able to remove approximately 40% of this material from the waste stream.

For information on what you can recycle or when recycling pick-up occurs, please go to the City Clerk page.
