  • The next Common Council mmeting will be held at 7pm May 12th in the Council Chambers of City Hall .
  • HYDRANT FLUSHING-The City of Hornell Water Department employees and the Hornell Firefighters will be flushing hydrants between the hours of midnight and 8:00 a.m. at the following locations on the following schedule:

    May 11, 2008

    VILLAGE OF NORTH HORNELL and

    TOWN OF HORNELLSVILLE

    AND

    beginning

May 12, 2008 and continuing the rest of the week in the

    CITY OF HORNELL

Residents are encouraged to refrain from washing clothes during flushing hours and to check their water for discoloration before use.  If you experience discolored water, let the cold water run until it clears.Hydrant flushing is a part of necessary maintenance to the water distribution system.  Your cooperation during this time is appreciated.

  • The City's Yard Waste Disposal Site/Composting Facility will be open 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays, excluding holidays. The Facility is closed Mondays through Wednesdays for the manufacture of mulch.  Area residents can drop off yard waste at the Facility. Soon, free mulch compost will be available – in limited quantities – for use in residential gardens. Residents of the City of Hornell, Village of North Hornell, and the Town of Hornellsville can drop off material at the Facility at no charge if they have identification that proves their addresses. Non-residents and contractors must pay $1.50 per bag or $10 per pickup or trailer load of not more than five (5) cubic yards.

  • Residents of 23 streets in the City of Hornell will see a change in their weekly garbage-collection – the first such revision in recent memory.                                                                                Beginning Tuesday, April 1, residences on the following streets will have their garbage collected each Wednesday: Maxwell, Lily, Grand, Merrill, O’Connor, Pine, West Pine, Reynolds, School, Fairview, Ada, Shamrock, South Division, West Van Scoter, Rose, Orchard, Spencer, Bennett Parkway, Hogan, Canisteo Street, Cook, west side of Scott, and the west side of Mill.                                                                                    Previously, garbage on those streets were collected on Thursday. Residents now will set out garbage on Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning for Wednesday collection.                           This also will affect annual street-sweeping operations on those streets. Residents now will have to remove cars from those streets each Tuesday evening during the sweeping season.               Meanwhile, collection of residential garbage in North Hornell also will begin in April. Garbage in the entire village will be collected each Thursday, starting April 3.                                                     City codes limit residences to putting out no more than five 30-gallon bags. All garbage must be held in a container.                     In addition, the City will enforce violations of the state law requiring the separation of recyclables. “People are lacking off” in separating recyclables from regular garbage, according to Mayor Shawn D. Hogan, with increasing amounts of recyclable materials (e.g., cardboard, plastic, and newspapers) entering the waste stream at the Steuben County landfill – which, due to county tipping fees, in turn increase the garbage surcharge paid by residents.
