Parks and Recreation

Our Department of Public Works has three municipal parks in its jurisdiction:

Veteran's Memorial Park was constructed in 1974, and has grown and developed to offer a variety of recreational opportunities to area residents. Department of Public Works forces have constructed six family picnic pavilions at this site, which may be reserved for family reunions, receptions, company picnics, school outings, and other family oriented activities at no charge for City residents. In 1995, a municipal swimming pool was added to the park. A perimeter pathway is marked for those wishing to log their walking and jogging miles. Recently, Public Works personnel constructed two new play areas for a total of three sites for children. The park also offers two softball fields, a combination baseball/soccer field, handball walls and a series of tennis courts. A central concession area has restroom facilities.

There will be no dogs allowed in Veteran's Memorial Park on the Fourth of July, Memorial Day and Labor Day. This policy will be strictly enforced and signs are posted at the park.
The Department of Public Works and The Hornell City School District cooperatively operate public facilities at Maple City Park. We are extremely proud of our athletic facilities, and especially our track and field complex which includes the artificial turf football/soccer field. During the summer months, Maple City Park is the home of the Summer Music Games, an international Drum and Bugle Corps Competition as well as summer track and soccer programs, semiprofessional baseball, and football programs, that serve to draw people to the Hornell area to experience Maple City Park and our beautiful City.
The Michael Fucci Memorial Park at Shawmut is located at the end of Thacher Street. Joining the pre-existing skateboard park, is a half-mile lighted walkway around the existing pond, aeration and ornamental fountains in the pond, a handicapped accessible fishing pier, three new pavilions, restrooms, a concession stand, children's play area, horseshoe pits and 56 parking spaces. There also will be two soccer/football fields.

The Shawmut hiking and biking trail officially opened in July 2017. The trail  is 1.8 miles and runs from Shawmut Park along the railroad tracks to Webbs Crossing. Parking is available at the Webbs Crossing end.
Dogs are allowed in the City's parks, provided they are leashed and not running freely. The City ordinance making dog owners responsible for cleaning up after their dogs is also in effect in all City parks.
To reserve a pavilion at Veterans' Memorial Park or Michael Fucci Memorial Park, please come into City Hall. Use of the pavilions is $25 for City of Hornell residents and $50 for non-residents.

Veteran's Memorial Park and Michael Fucci Memorial Park are both "Carry In - Carry Out" parks. Please be sure to take your trash home with you. The parks belong to all of us...it is our responsibility to care for them and protect them for generations to come.
